Tata Tiago Second Hand Buying Guide For First Time Buyers
The Tata Tiago has been a comfortable, roomy and practical hatchback since its launch in 2016. And then, in 2020, Tata Motors gave its smallest car a facelifted look, a reworked interior, and added features, and also removed the 1.05-litre diesel engine from its range. As a first time car buyer, the Tiago presents excellent value, but here are a few things to consider.
Tata Tiago Engine and Gearbox Details
The Tata Tiago facelift is only offered with a 1.2-litre, three-pot, naturally aspirated petrol engine that outputs 86hp and 113Nm of torque. It comes with a choice of a 5-speed manual or AMT transmission. Tata also launched a CNG variant in 2022 and a CNG with the AMT automatic in 2024. If your running is high, opt for the CNG since you get lower running expenses, and you can also choose the AMT for greater convenience. And the good thing is that from August 2023 onwards, the Tiago CNG has been offered with Tata's dual CNG cylinder configuration, so you don't lose out on boot space. It should be noted, though, that the CNGs will cost more to purchase in the second-hand market. But if your running is low, it's better to go for one of the petrols.
Tata Tiago Variants and Features
At launch, the Tiago facelift was available in four variants – XE, XT, XZ and XZ+. But in typical Tata tradition, the line-up was updated occasionally with new variants, colours and features. Talking about features, the top-of-the-line XZ+ when it went on sale had a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, a Harman audio system, digital instrument cluster, rear camera, automatic climate control, drive modes, electrically foldable and adjustable wing mirrors and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Safety Features and GNCAP Rating
In its safety package, it gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, CSC, and parking sensors in the rear end. Tiago, besides, got a 4-star adult occupant rating and a 3-star child occupant rating from Global NCAP. Don't go for XE unless you've got virtually no money to spend, as it is the plainest one around. One of the mid-spec variants has got to be your way for better value. But you must move up to XZ+ if you want all of the listed features.
Maintenance and Service
Mechanically, the Tata Tiago is a good car, but the Fingers Crossed moment may have been a nervous stretch for owners. The cabin is richly built but a few complaints also come up regarding rattles. In all other respects, servicing the car demands a major service every 15, 000km but spare parts are quite cheap to buy. Its warranty is supported by its extensive service network extending across the nation.
Furthermore, the new body of the Tiago remains virtually unchanged, which simply means that you are purchasing a used vehicle no different from the brand-new ones in showrooms.
Buying A Used Tata Tiago: What To Look For
Clunky AMT Gearbox
It is not usual for the AMT gearbox to fail, but it is certainly worth checking. On a test drive, observe whether the car accelerates away from rest smoothly and without lag. Also, check that the shifts are not very clunky. Otherwise, the gearbox may need attention.
Touchscreen Glitches
The owners have complained about the touchscreen infotainment system of the Tiago. There have been complaints that it freezes, crashes and reboots on its own, so do check it before purchasing. Ensure that your phone connects smoothly and that the software is updated.
Interior Rattles
There have been complaints from some owners of the Tiago about several squeaks and rattles emanating from inside as the vehicle ages. Therefore, during a test drive, take a bumpy section and listen for any noise emanating from behind the dashboard or the door cards.
Tata Tiago Warranty
As a norm, it has a 3-year/1,00,000km warranty, but if possible, go for one with an extended warranty package, as chances are the car will still be under it. This will provide you with that additional peace of mind.
The Resale Value of A Second Hand Tata Tiago
There are enough examples available in the used market, starting from as low as Rs 3.5 lakh. But don't go over Rs 6 lakh, as you'd be better off purchasing a brand new one. You can use the updated Tiago to negotiate a better price.
